Why force can't equal TNT

“Pounds of TNT” quantifies released energy: by convention 1 ton of TNT = 4.184 GJ exactly, so 1 lb of TNT = 4.184e9 ÷ 2,000 = 2.092 MJ. A force in newtons only becomes energy once it acts through a distance: E = F × d, in newton-meters = joules.

So the meaningful conversion is J → lb TNT: divide joules by 2,092,000.

Energy scales in TNT pounds

A baseball pitch (~120 J) is 0.00006 lb TNT. A car at highway speed (~400 kJ) is 0.19 lb. A lightning bolt (~1 GJ) is 478 lb. The Hiroshima bomb (~63 TJ) was 30 million lb — 15 kilotons.

The comparisons work because TNT equivalence is defined purely as an energy yardstick, not an explosion simulation.
